Watford Survive, Window Intact

Watford brought in Middlesbrough’s Andrew Taylor in on a six month loan deal yesterday, with Scott Severin completing his exile in England by moving back to Scotland with Dundee Utd on a free transfer.

This represents a bit of a coup for Malky, in so much as that there have been no other significant (ie Scott Loach leaving) transfers outward bound as the season starts to pick up momentum.

Watford’s latest recruit is a left back and will wear the number three shirt, indicating he will be fighting Lloydinho for the left back spot, welcome competition if ever it was needed.

Taylor joins former ‘boro youngsters Josh Walker and Danny Graham at the Vic and will be looking to get some first team football under his belt, adding to his 128 full appearances to date.

“He is naturally left-footed so will give us something different as he joins our group of defensive options. We’re delighted to have him here for six months. It’s a period of time where he can really get settled in and enjoy playing regular first-team football once again.” Malky told the official website yesterday.

Look out over the next few days for a full analysis* of Watford’s transfer activity.

*for analysis read: an overly grandiose muttering of what went on and what it probably won’t mean for the club

Malky Mackay Profile

Posted in News with tags , on June 15, 2009 by Matt Churchill

So Malky Mackay has been appointed manager of Watford FC, just as had been predicted in the last week.

Malky played for 5 clubs, Queen’s Park (70), Celtic (34), Norwich (213), West Ham (18) and Watford (52), and acheived promotion with Norwich, West Ham and of course us, all in successive seasons, making 14 appearances in the yellow shirt in our sole season in the Premiership. Malky was also capped by Scotland 3 times in his career.

A no-nonsense centre back, Malky was pivotal in our promotion season, helping to keep opposition forwards at bay as he partnered Jay and Clarke Carlisle at the back.

Malky was given a backroom role alongside other Hornet legend Alec Chamberlain as Boothroyd sought to add youth into the coaching set up at The Vic.

Malky stepped up to the managerial plate after Boothroyd found himself out of a job, taking Watford to 2 wins, 2 losses and a draw in a five game spell, before returning to his coaching role as Rodgers took over.

Malky is indeed a Watford man, and has been appointed by what appears to be a Watford board. We wait with baited breath.

“Malky Mackay, Malky Mackay, he’s having a beer and he’s having a pie”, standard.

Malky Mackay set to be Watford boss

Malky Mackay appears to be on the brink of being appointed Watford manager in the next few days, if you believe everything coming out in the press.

So what will we get with Malky in charge?

Promotion – Probably not
Relegation – Hopefully not
Consolidation – Yep

And is that such a bad thing after the last 12 months we’ve had?

I’d take consolidation financially and football-wise over another horrendous scrap with relegation and the auditors thanks very much, even if it means we lose some of our better players.

Poom and bust

Cheesey titles aside, Mart Poom‘s contract with Watford has been terminated by mutual consent, the club website revealed today.

Mart was of course the subject of Aidy Boothroyd’s most inspired substitution ever – no, not in the Reading game with the “goal what wasn’t”, but an away trip to Colchester.

Watford, at 2-0 down, were forced to bring Poom off as his back was playing up. Richard Lee replaced him and the hornets went on to win 3-2. Glorious.

Mart has been plagued by injuries since his transfer to the Golden Boys, which is a pity as he is a great professional and has had a wonderful career, including this stunning header for Sunderland a few years back:

Reminiscent of big Dan…

All the best to Mart as he moves into a new phase, and I hope Watford fans give him the respect he undoubtedly deserves.
